I have literally seen everything in my surrounding vapourize when I have put my attention on something that I want.
I think one of the greatest asset we human possess is to direct our attention to something and give every thing we have got to that one entity or activity that we are so dearly focused up on.
Achieving that state is hard. Some people call it a state of flow. I do not totally agree to that interpretation of the phenomenon.
To me it is an experience in which nothing else remains in the universe- You might be blowing trumpet in my ears and I will not be disturbed at all because the thing I have chosen to focus on has consumed all my attentional bandwidth.
OHHHHH!
It is a good model to understand what I am trying to say.
I had read somewhere that we humans could only hold a few pieces of information in our head - around seven independent pieces of information.
Now, lets assume it to be true for the moment.
That means if these seven thing are seven metaphorical seats in my head that could be utilized by any piece of information. Some seats will be automatically filled by our environment and some seats will be in our control.
Now, becoming more focused simply means we being able to deliberately fill these seats instead of these seats getting filled on their own because of any other reason.
If and only if we could practice and make a habit to deliberately fill theses seats then over period of prolonged practice we would become better in putting our attention to things and activities we want to focus.
There is no secret of any kind- any person who is willing to test this could experiment and let me know the outcome. I would urge you to experiment for at least six months for half an hour every day.
If this the case- then lets make a few predictions.
1) over period external things will not affect you until you want them to affect- basically neurons in your frontal lobe will increase. Specifically in the region responsible for your self control, as all the while you have been training your brain to control your attention and focus on where you want it to be.
2) You will become emotionally strong- as it a corollary to the first one. Your brain will not easily be affected by emotions as you will get to choose whether to get affected by surrounding environmental emotional state or not, instead of being a victim of the mimetic behavior of human.
3) Your will power will be off the chart.
4) Better at choosing activities with delayed gratification.
Back to attention- I am thankful to meditation for helping me getting better at focusing my mental energy.
It has been one of the most important gifts of my life that I have received and I will always be in debt to my martial arts teacher who taught me this magnificent art.
I hope science would perform more experiments on mindfullness and meditation so that I get to learn more and improve my experience.
The Problem-
It is practically impossible to sustain that state of attention. I have been trying to maintain it but I have been failing for quite some time.
But I have not given up, I know how important it is to be absolutely hyperfocused on what you are trying to do. Hence,I will keep practicing till the last breathe of my existence. I do not know how long it will take ,I do not know it will ever happen, I do not know that I will ever be able to achieve the level of control..... But I will keep practicing.
Even one experience of that state of mind is sufficient for you to crave for it. I have had multiple experiences ..... Lets see how far I can take it.
Keep Smiling
