one thing about problems

I was raised with middle-class values: We were like any other middle-class family in Ludhiana. I was born in 1957 as the second son of the late Sat Paul and Lalita Mittal. My father was a politician and, at one point of time, an MP. A gap of two years separates me from both my elder brother Rakesh and younger sibling Rajan.
My father predicted a bright future for me: As a child, I was rather active for my age. Sensing something special about me, my father told me that I had the vision to accomplish great things in life. He always encouraged me to do what I wanted to do -- and this has stood me in good stead.
I have always dreamt big: Even while in school -- initially, Vineberg Allen in Mussourie, and later, a number of schools in Ludhiana -- I aspired to achieve great things in life. Admittedly, I wasn't quite sure about what these great things would be. Nonetheless, after I graduated in economics and political science from Punjab University in 1979, I was more than ready to chase my ambitions.
A loan from my father put me in business: I was all of 18 and just out of college when I decided to start something on my own. I stepped out of home with Rs 20,000 borrowed from my father. While I knew things wouldn't be easy, it was only after I fended for myself that I realised how tough life could be. My first venture was to trade bicycle parts and hosiery yarn. The initial days proved to be difficult and I earned very little from my business. But I kept at it. Each day, when I retired for the night, I told myself that money would come in the next day.
Tough times don't last: My business required me to travel a lot -- sometimes, with very little in my wallet. Those were days when I travelled alongside my goods at the back of trucks. Travelling by air was out of the question -- a train ticket was all I could afford. Then, hotels were out too -- small hostels and clubs were what my budget allowed. I put in 16 to 18 hours each day, but my business just didn't take off. After mulling over other possibilities, I changed track -- I started importing portable gensets. Life changed for the better and I became one of the biggest importers of gensets at that time.
Out of business, I romanced telecom: In 1983, the government imposed a ban on the import of gensets. I was out of business overnight. Everything I was doing came to a screeching halt. I was in trouble. The question then was: what should I do next? Then, opportunity came calling. While in Taiwan, I noticed the popularity of the push-button phone -- something which India hadn't seen then. We were still using those rotary dials with no speed dials or redials. I sensed my chance and embraced the telecom business.
Life is a great leveller: I started marketing telephones, answering/fax machines under the brand name Beetel and the company picked up really fast. In 1992, when the telecom sector opened up, I successfully bid for one of the four mobile services. This is how AirTel came into being. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the same year. Even as I was doing well business-wise, my father succumbed to cardiac arrest. I was very attached to my father. During all these years, he had come to my office just once -- and he was happy with the way things were going for me.
For me, the customer is king: Backed by my belief in taking the competition head-on, my company has earned a name for being a monopoly-buster. We have made forays into basic telephony, long-distance calls and other state-run services. But if we have achieved anything, it is because we have always kept the customer in mind. It is he who has benefited -- and so have we.
Work requires compromises: Over the years, I have forgone my favourite pastimes. There was a time when I flew planes, pursued sky-gliding, and played golf and tennis. Slowly, one after the other, all these preferred pastimes have disappeared from my routine because of the pressure of work.
My family is my biggest asset: My wife Nyna, daughter Eiesha and twin sons Kavin and Shravin are always there to lend support. Whenever I manage to find time, I take my family for a holiday. My brothers, along with whom I run the company, are the other constants in my life. Our growth lies in working together and this is exactly how things are going.
Not everyone is as fortunate as I am: Everybody nurtures dreams; but few manage to realise them. What started with Rs 20,000 and just me on my own has grown into a Rs 1,500-crore company with 5,000 employees. Bharti is a pioneer in the private telecom sector and AirTel has its presence in 16 states across India. I have realised my dreams -- I consider myself fortunate.
I believe in divine intervention: I have faith in a power which has always guided me through thick and thin. This is the power which infuses me with a positive spirit and provides encouragement -- day after day. I do not visit temples regularly, but I have been to Tirupati and Vaishno Devi.
There are miles to go: Sometimes, I find it difficult to believe the position I have attained. In fact, I often ask myself whether my success is for real or a dream! Business is an ongoing process and I want to to take my company to greater heights. My ambition is to provide world-class services across the globe. I aim to be the leading player in the global telecom market.
You too can overcome -- I have: I realise that there are numerous people who see me as a success story. My advice to these people is: if you have a dream, chase it. Ignite care - I think that is how you grow....
if you could ignite care in someone about something, then she/he will give everything they have to make it happen.

Whatever you touched ... you made it simple than before. Code is like the tool that one artist is using to express his/her creativity. Tool does not have any creativity at all.
The most enriching and beautiful part of working in a software company is that we are working to simplify something that was difficult before us.
It must be hard as ... nobody was able to do it up till now.
All this hassle, all this fight was to do such a simple thing .. i just wanted to be able to make things simpler... we happen to make tools... we could do something else
we could have been barber, we could have been chef, I do not know.
The core value I want to strive now is to make things simpler.

The moment you will imbibe this simple fact that you exist to create simplicity ...you will not make much mistakes

I had been afraid for nothing.
I did not have a purpose to spend my time with software .. now I do have a purpose. I know why am I writing code , I know what is the end goal of spending time in software.

I do not know how useful it would be in this context but one thing that has stayed with me and will always remain with me, was the simplicity of the idea of thinking everything in terms of maps.

When I was meditating today, I saw newton in my deep state. I do not know it was newton or my interpretation of newton... But I saw something. I got immediately convinced that newton must have been living for creating certainty. Increasing Certainty in action - the most important combination of words I have ever discovered. -- learning is an autotellic activity.

What is the problem that doctors have been discussing with us:
We have been talking to a lot many doctors about their problems in daily practice.After many conversations, one theme of questions were repeated :

3) How to educate my patients about my practice?

I live for certainty

Incremental rate of return.....
This is a fundamental question that I use to ask myself.
I do not know how and when did I get this notion of asking for rate of return in from anything in life.
I do not go for the current value of anything, reason being... the current value is somehow a distortion of current information baggage.
The thing that is interesting and a little difficult, is to ask the meta level question.
The activity that we are about to embark on, does it have incremental rate of return or decremental (there is no such word... I want to use it... so fuck it) rate of return.
It is hard to tell whether an activity will lead to incremental rate of return or not. But Every now and then, I come across something that has incremental rate of return.
And I will do it, no matter how many people will be against it.
I can simply not explain the fundamental reason for doing it. They are generally not in a state of mind where they would accept my reasoning. But that does not matter... I know eventually they will agree to my interpretation of the world, as more people will come on board and join the activity.
People have a deep yearning for social proof, I do not.
Somehow, I have been able to make up my own mind and persevere in the direction I see fit.
Now, I do not care what you think about me.
For some ... I am a genius......., for some... I am an egomaniac, retarded, arrogant, immovable ,indefatigable bastard....But I am none of those.
In my world view, I am simply trying to acquire knowledge and apply knowledge. Fuck everything else.
But lets come back to the original concept of discussion.... You are reading this because you somehow got enchanted with the title... so I should be true to it.
Lets talk about incremental rate of return on relationship.... be it personal or professional....
I have not found many people in the professional zone... whom I could say that my journey with those individual will have incremental rate of return.
People are driven by external sources and the closer they get to the perceived limits of their dream... they stop the journey..... then all the fun evaporates and misery becomes the default status.
There are only a few individuals who were in that category where people were working for a bigger reason than satisfying their animal instincts.
But I want to create a place or a group of people who understand this thing in their bones and practice it in everything they do.
Personal level....
I have not found any bandi in my life who understood this before me telling this simple thing to her.
It would be an epiphany, if I would ever find such a bandi... But I am optimistic.
I would request , all the girls who are reading this... be truthful to yourself and do not lie to me about the status of your realization... anyhow I will find the core of your existence and If you would have lied to me then it would be counter productive for our relationship.
I do not know how valuable this concept would be .... but I want to ask myself this thing about everything that I do.....
Every small detail, every small thing that I could imagine should pass this simple test....

If I have kept on searching ... I have found the answers .... most of the time.
Search is the reward, journey is the process, end is just an outcome.

When I was small, I wanted to know what it is like to be a grow up. I had all that curiosity about being an independent adult.
But as it turned out that these grown up people were nothing more than those small children stretched in time.
It turned out that society does not allow you to learn new things after a few years in life.And I firmly believe that if a person is not experimenting or learning in his/her life then he/she is a breathing dead blob of hydrocabons and some other equally shitty substances.
You have to find or make an activity that will be in line with the fundamentals of your existence.
For most people this activity is called work. Something by which you will be known/understood/remembered/have mark in the world.
So, this is who you are. In the long run, you are your work. No matter how painful the journey is, the onus of finding your love in life is upon you.
